Working With Students Who Can't Read

This is an issue that we all occasionally have to deal with.

First, I recommend using a reading learning program. Ideas of what some centers use are located here. This can be part of a PSNL contract. The student may initially need to spend almost or all of his/her time learning to read. It will be worth it in the long run as it builds a foundation from which he/she can continue to learn and grow from.

It also helps to have someone who reads well to work with the struggling student as a reading mentor. The mentor can be another student. Start off by having the mentor read aloud while setting beside the student. The mentor should point to the words they are reading. This should last only be done for a few days. Then have the student read aloud in unison with the mentor. Again, pointing to the words as they read them. This can go on for as long as necessary. Eventually the student should read aloud themselves with the mentor listening in to correct when necessary.

Thirdly, get an easy to read version of the Bible and find it in audio form. Have them follow in the Bible as they listen to the audio version. Of course you will need to monitor them to ensure they are following properly.

I also recommend building a library of audio books. Many Christian books are available in audio form. You can make listening to the Bible and an audio book part of a PSNL contract.
It may take most of the program for them to make progress but the key is – Are they making progress. If they are then keep moving forward. If they are not making progress they may be conning you to get out of academic work (I’ve had it happen!) or they may need a higher level of educational evaluation and instruction.

Most everyone can read a little bit. If they can read at all they can start with a very simple version of the Bible. The NIrV has the lowest reading level. Most can start with the 100 series PSNL lessons – intentionally written at a lower reading level. As they begin at this level and begin to grow spiritually their reading and comprehension skills typically improve quickly.

If you have information and tools that will benefit other teachers in helping their students learn to read please post your response.
