Forgetting someone’s name  is embarrassing, but in ministry it can be disastrous.  Here’s some tips to help you remember the names of the people you meet,  whether they be donors, volunteers, or students.

  1. Hear the name. — Concentrate on their name, really hear what they are saying — “Jacob Johnson”.
  2. Repeat the name. — It’s nice to meet you “Jacob”.
  3. Comment on the name. — Something as simple as relating their name to a friend or relative.  My favorite uncle’s name is “Jacob”.
  4. Use the name during a conversation. —  Just add their name to a comment. I hope you’ll be able to attend the event, “Jacob”.
  5. Use the name when leaving. — Thank you for coming today, “Jacob”.
  6. Write their name down. — This may need to be done after you’ve left their company, unless the opportunity presents itself.

People like to be recognized and when you remember their name it makes them feel that they are important to you.

Years ago I was at a gathering with a person who I had occasionally seen at events for over 10 years. She asked me if I were new to the organization. That didn’t leave a favorable impression. A few years ago, I met another lady for the first time, in the same setting. We were introduced once; the next week we saw her again and she not only remembered my name, but my husband’s name also. That was a favorable impression for her and for her husband’s ministry! I would be much more likely to offer support for their ministry, because she cared enough to learn my name.
