We want our students to have a true life-transforming encounter with Christ. Of course we know that they must hear the truth of the Gospel message and we know the Holy Spirit works in their heart to convict and draw them to himself. We also know that he uses us, the church, the body of Christ to connect with others and make him known.
So what is our part. What are practical things we can do as ATC staff members to help create an atmosphere where students can let their guard down and be willing to listen; to create a house of healing and transformation? Over the next few newsletters I will share a few simple thoughts for your consideration and application.
Love – an action verb, not an emotion.
One particular student decided to leave the program. The staff member took him to the bus station but the bus did not leave for a few hours. Rather than leaving him the staff offered to hang out with him. They drove around town, ate lunch and drank coffee and talked. The student was taken back to the bus station in time to catch his bus and he left. About a month later he called to come back in the program. He said, it was because of the kindness and patience that you showed me that day that I decided to come back. I felt loved and accepted.
Run, play, walk, talk, laugh, all action verbs. When I mention each word you can picture someone doing that particular action. Think of love as an action verb and not an emotion. What action do you picture? Helping a student do a personal task or chore, spending time with them doing what they like to do, a hug, looking them straight in the eyes with a heartfelt word of encouragement, to name a few. What do you wish someone would do to express love to you? Maybe that is what you should do. Hey! Isn’t there a Bible verse about that?
