A Healthy You Equals a Healthy Ministry

The conference theme for 2012-2013 is CONNECT. There are at least four primary connection points that are crucial to being healthy and having a healthy ministry.

 CONNECT to:

  • God
  • Others
  • the Need
  • the Legacy

God – First, foundational and vital, is our own personal relationship with God. We cannot serve without God induced strength; we cannot give water from a dry well. A healthy and vibrant relationship with the Father ensures we have the strength to serve and to live and proclaim His love and truth.

Let’s be honest; Teen Challenge ministry is tough and it can often be very draining, physically, mentally, and spiritually. The spiritual battles and the demanding schedules are our reality. You are on the front line of the battle, fighting for souls. Anyone who stays on the frontline constantly is setting himself up for fatigue, burnout, personal problems; your supply of spiritual “ammunition” is drained and you have nothing left to fight with. This not only affects the effectiveness of your ministry but at its worst you are setting yourself up for personal failure.

I have heard well meaning believers say “Christian’s don’t retreat!” Now, I know what they are intending by this; they are saying that we don’t run from the battle. I agree. But, I do beg differ on the fact that we don’t need to retreat, that is to find a place of spiritual rest, reflection – a place to fill-up your spiritual gas tank.  Jesus did! And, if he had to, I probably better do it to. Just read through the gospels and you often find Jesus attempting to get away by himself to pray. In fact Luke 5:16 says, “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Sounds like Jesus “retreated”, maybe we should too. Isn’t there something in the Bible about a Sabbath?

Isaiah 40:31 “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall run and not grow weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

So what are you doing to ensure a healthy connection to God. Here is a quick check-up list:

  1. Personal Prayer: intercession, listening, etc.
  2. Reading and Meditating on God’s Word
  3. Worship: private and community
  4. Fellowship: close, healthy relationships, accountability
  5. Giving: service and financial

Evaluate yourself in these areas and set one or two small steps (goals) to begin moving forward in at least one area today.
